This is being undertaken by Suffolk based Building Services Engineering Consultants – Energy Solutions Associates, on behalf of Luminus Group, Cambridgeshire County Council/SmartLIFE, Anglia Ruskin University and Fenland District Council.

The existing and older electrical heating is being measured together with the overall energy use of each flat.   Later in the year the housing will be upgraded with the installation of air sourced heat pumps and small scale photovoltaic panels. These will be measured for their energy performance and compared to gauge the effectiveness and results for reducing the energy use as part of this study.   Important to this project will be the resident’s interaction which will also take account of their responses and experiences to their own use of the building services systems; before and after the upgrading and retrofit of the lower carbon technologies.

The Passiv Haus standard is the only international low carbon building construction standard that can applied to any type of building.  Furthermore a variation of the standard called EnerPHit can be applied to refurbishment or building fabric improvement projects.

 If all aspects of the standard are reached then it should be possible to reduce the energy consumption of a building by up to 80% compared to the building regulations it was built to.

The assessment of the current building and proposed changes needed for EnerPHit compliance will be completed by the end of April 2012.
